Workshop on Environmental Monitoring for Students of Kalush Lyceum No. 10 and Kalush Lyceum Named After Dmytro Bakhmatyuk

On April 14, students from the Dmytro Bakhmatyuk Kalush Lyceum and Kalush Lyceum No. 10, accompanied by their chemistry teachers and school administrators, visited the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.

The department’s faculty, who are implementing the EU Erasmus+ Jean Monnet project “Monitoring of Environmental Objects in the Context of European Integration” (MEOEU), presented the initiative and introduced its key areas to the visitors.

During the event, students listened to a lecture on the main sources of pollution and atmospheric pollutants in Europe from the optional course “Monitoring of Environmental Objects in the Context of European Integration” and got acquainted with Ukrainian online resources for monitoring air quality and other environmental indicators. They paid special attention to the international Air Quality Index (AQI) and its Ukrainian counterpart, the UAQI, developed by environmental NGOs—both serving as crucial tools for assessing atmospheric air purity.

While performing laboratory work within the framework of the optional course practicum, students performed their own environmental analyses: identifying heavy metal cations, measuring sulfate ion concentrations in water and soil, and using modern devices for rapid air quality assessment.

This hands-on experience gave high school students valuable insight into real-world environmental challenges and a chance to feel like true eco-analytical chemists.
