“From environmental challenges to economic opportunities: the unique experience of the Department of Chemistry”

On June 27, thanks to the initiative of our associate professor and research associate at the STATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND DESIGN INSTITUTE OF BASIC CHEMISTRY “ NIOCHIM”, Olga Khatsevych, the staff, students, and alumni of the department had a unique opportunity to see how environmental problems can be transformed into economic benefits! The event was held within the framework of the project led by the teachers of the Department of Chemistry, “Monitoring of Environmental Objects in the Context of European Integration” (ERASMUS+ Jean Monnet Module).

We visited the Dombrovsky quarry, tailings pond, and sludge storage tank; took brine samples; brought them to the analytical laboratory of the STATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND DESIGN INSTITUTE OF BASIC CHEMISTRY “ NIOCHIM”; and became acquainted with the technology of processing these materials into potassium-magnesium fertilizers. We were even shown how fertilizers produced in the laboratory affect the growth of cucumbers, tomatoes, and leafy greens in the institute’s greenhouses.

The Department of Chemistry expresses its sincere gratitude to the Director of the STATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND DESIGN INSTITUTE OF BASIC CHEMISTRY “ NIOCHIM”, Irina Dovhaliuk, for her support.
